Google to Double TV Ad Inventory

In the next week or two, Google will double the amount of TV inventory it's making available to advertisers.

The company's trial program to manage television ads seems to have gotten off to a slow start. Our Google source said the minimum spend for the beta program is a modest (for TV) $10,000 a month, and just 50 clients have tested the system so far. We don't know whether the new inventory is coming from existing partners EchoStar and Astound Cable or from new sources. Google announced the trial in April.

Google's rumored foray into managing television ads with its AdWords platform has entered the next phase with a limited trial program over EchoStar's Dish Network across the U.S. and Astound Cable, a local cable system in the Bay Area.

The tests, which were spotted last month, were announced last night by Google and EchoStar. A small group of advertisers are participating in the test, and more will be added as it progresses, expected to be in a "relatively short time" according to Keval Desai, director of product management, Google TV advertising.

Google has been testing ways to extend its AdWords ad management platform beyond the search and contextual ads that are its bread and butter. Recent moves offline into print and radio have had limited success, while online tests include online video and in-game ads.

Desai said Google sees a move to manage TV ads as a natural extension of its platform, especially as television becomes more interactive, and advertisers begin to demand from TV more of the qualities that make Google successful online.

"TV is becoming like the Web. You have audience segmentation; users care about relevant messaging; advertisers care about aggregating and audience efficiently and getting measurements on how they're messaging with you; and inventory owners like to monetize their viewership, even if it's a small viewership," Desai said. "We're able to have some positive impact on those problems on the Internet side, so we expect to have a similar impact on the television side."

Under the system, EchoStar and Astound will make inventory available to Google advertisers across all channels and dayparts. If the inventory is sold out, the operators will make more available as needed, Desai said. Pricing will be by CPM, under the usual AdWords auction model, with inventory from each provider available in the same marketplace. Ads can be scheduled to appear as early as a day after uploading, he said.

Targeting can be done by network, daypart, region or demographic of the network. No targeting will be done to individuals or households, so users should not worry about the security of their account or usage data collected by the provider, Desai said.

Advertisers must supply their own video file to upload, though Google can recommend partners to assist in creating the ad. Any standard format the network accepts can be used, though typically the :30 spot will be the standard. The file is uploaded to the "head end" TV service providers, who will insert the ads via their usual process, he said.

Tracking will be done via set-top boxes, with reporting to include aggregate impressions (with no individual- or household-specific data), as well as data on how long an ad was viewed.

This post is an outline of the methods for the more creative SEOs out there - the article marketers and bloggers seeking to build powerful, business sustaining links - who have perhaps overlooked some crucial publishers and communities to target with awesome content.

1) Know and Target Your Most Profitable Keywords

3) Sort By PR and Links Out (Co-Citations)

1) Know and Target Your 3 (for now) Most Profitable Keywords

This link building process begins - as your online marketing efforts always should - with your most profitable keywords. It's likely that these are your most competitive keywords too - the words you used in your URL, the titles of your site pages and in the link text of the articles you've been writing and distributing and links and PPC ads you've been buying.

The process I outline here can certainly stretch to encompass ALL of your keywords, from the top of the big head to the very tippy-tip of your long tail. I'm not currently adept at managing and manipulating enormous amounts of data and for my purposes I find that limitations - like digging in on only a couple of the most important keywords - give me far more traction and forward momentum.

I say know and target 3 keywords because this will give you plenty of data to start a two-three week project at a couple hours or so a day. Target more if you want, but if you lean on the creative side like me it's important to maintain momentum on projects. Aiming at just 3, or 2 or even 1, will simplify the process for your first run through and will get you to spend more time focusing on the important hub sites in the communities that influence rankings for your target keywords.

2) Conduct a Link Hub Research Dig

This is an exciting part for me because of the tool I use to support my dig. Nothing beats hands-on rankings investigations, but these won't show you as efficiently whose links are actually affecting rankings right now.

I use a for-pay windows-based program for my hub/authority digs. Before plunking down your hard-earned cash for a hub finder I'd suggest working with Aaron Wall's hub finder, currently housed on his LinkHounds site.

I'm not as familiar with Wall's hub finder as the tool I use, but in conducting a search on his I found it did help identify the sites that link out to more than one of the top 10 sites for your search term.

It has several posted mirrors in case Wall's has reached its maximum queries for the day (it uses Google's API and is limited to 1,000 queries a day):

When I search for hubs I "open up the flood gates" and investigate the maximum listings for my tool (top 30 sites for a term) and the minimum number of links to sites in the top 30 (which is 2). This means I've got tons of back link data for those top 30 sites and will see the hubs that helped these top sites achieve those rankings.

I'd suggest that you conduct as wide a search as possible at first with whatever tool you're using. Over time you can narrow down your searches as you experiment to find that sweet spot for the term or niche you're developing links in.

3) Sort By PR and Links Out (Co-Citations)

So once you've got 100, 200 or even 1,000 sites in your spread sheet you can start analyzing and organizing them.

First I list my sites by PR - though this metric alone is NOT an indicator of a good link - and then by number of "co-citations," which is how many of the top 30 sites for my keyword this given site links to. All the sites that didn't return PR get cut. Depending on how many sites I'm analyzing, sites with PRs of 1, 2, or even 3 get cut too. When you're faced with analyzing 1,000 sites and you're spending your clients' money on your time you've got to draw lines using some kind of metric :)

That said, if there's a site with an interesting URL that has a very low PR I will check it out. It could be a new community site or blog that could be valuable for link distribution, and often the fresher, newer sites are more likely to respond to your emails.

The other important metric of course is how many of the top sites each of these hub sites link to. If there's a low-PR site that happens to link to a bunch of the top sites then there's a reasonable chance that this site would be a good one to get a link from. Further, if we're talking about an uncompetitive keyword then there's more reason to throw the PR metric out the window as a starting guide.

Once you've trimmed the list at the bottom you can trim it at the top too by cutting out Google Answers and all the DMOZ clones out there. You'll find lots of unreachable-for-now type of sites like CNN and others that you needn't worry yourself with at this stage of the game. A link from a major site would be awesome, but for now you should focus on the easily attainable!

4) Determine Your Strategic Direction: Content Creation, Link Requests, Link Purchases, Content Distribution

By this time you should start seeing some interesting link possibilities emerge. For one thing social media sites will start to appear - you'll start to see the ones that may have some bearing on the keyword(s) you're trying to rank for. Give these their own list and make time to set up profiles in them and see about finding a few friends within them.

You'll also see directories that appear to have bearing on the rankings for your keyword too. Mark these down as potential submission points and places to potentially buy a link. Some sites sell links and even regular banner ads. If it's a niche site it could well be worth buying some actual advertising!

Finally, the blogs, forums and other relevant and influential content publishers will emerge, and these are the sites that I focus on with my creative efforts.

For me, the content sites, blogs and forums are a creative revelation on a number of different levels. As a writer these sites show me what kinds of content will earn me publication or links from their sites. They're also a sneak peek at what kinds of content are most relevant to this demographic (as sliced by the target keyword). Whether I'm creating content and requesting links or creating content and requesting publication with link attribution, this list of sites helps me understand what kinds of content (how-tos, opinion, entertainment) work for this space.

Further, these hub sites are often focal points for communities, or are even forums themselves. This kind of a link dig is an awesome starting point for beginning your "conversation marketing" and community outreach because it reveals the influential community sites for a given keyword.

5) GO! GO! GO!

Write articles! Submit to publishers! Write tailored, custom link requests to blogs! Join forums, answer questions and write about your answers! Conduct interviews for targeted link exchanges! Buy links! Go! Go! Go!

It's easy to get caught in the analysis paralysis of link digging. It's exciting to find 100 potential sites to link to you. Excitement is great but I've had a hard time getting grocery stores to let me buy food with excitement alone. The point of this hub identification exercise is to better target your link building efforts on the sites that will make a difference to your rankings. Good luck, God bless, build links!


 


ComScore Releases Search Engine Rankings For July

comScore, a company that measures the digital world, has released their monthly qSearch analysis of the internet activity across the major search engines.

comScore reports that in July 2007, Google Sites ranked as the top core search engine with 55.2 percent share of searches among the top five search engines. Yahoo! Sites ranked second with 23.5 percent, followed by Microsoft Sites (12.3 percent), Ask Network (4.7 percent) and Time Warner Network (4.4 percent).

In July 2007, Google Sites led the market with nearly 5.5 billion search queries (this was up 2.4 percent versus June and 64 percent versus year ago). Yahoo! Sites was up 0.8 percent to 2.3 billion searches. Microsoft Sites was up 2.8 percent to 1.2 billion searches during July 2007, and Ask Network was up 2.9 percent to 462 million searches. Time Warner Network was actually down 0.9 percent to 436 million. comScore reports that Google benefits disproportionately from affiliate searches and multi-tab searches that help raise its share of core searches relative to the share reported in qSearch 1.0.

July U.S. Expanded Search Rankings

According to comScore, they will publicly report the number of search queries conducted in the expanded search universe for the top 10 search properties. In July 2007, Google Sites ranked as the top property in the expanded search universe with 6.6 billion searches, driven by Google (5.5 billion) and YouTube/All Other (1.1 billion). Yahoo! Sites ranked second with 2.5 billion, followed by Microsoft Sites (1.3 billion), Time Warner Network (959 million), and Fox Interactive Media (587 million).

Thirty years ago he helped create a technology that has revolutionised millions of lives around the world. But yesterday the man known as the "godfather of the net" laid out his vision of where our online future might be, including a time when we download entire TV series in seconds - and even surf the web from Mars.

Talking at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival, Vint Cerf - one of the handful of researchers who helped build the internet in the 1970s - said that the television industry would change rapidly as it approached its "iPod moment".

The 64-year-old, who is now a vice-president of the web giant Google and chairman of the organisation that administrates the internet, told an audience of media moguls that TV was rapidly approaching the same kind of crunch moment that the music industry faced with the arrival of the MP3 player.

"85% of all video we watch is pre-recorded, so you can set your system to download it all the time," he said. "You're still going to need live television for certain things - like news, sporting events and emergencies - but increasingly it is going to be almost like the iPod, where you download content to look at later."

Dr Cerf, who helped build the internet while working as a researcher at Stanford University in California, used the festival's Alternative McTaggart Lecture to explain to television executives how the internet's influence was radically altering their businesses and how it was imperative for them to view this as a golden opportunity to be exploited instead of a threat to their survival. The arrival of internet television has long been predicted, although it has succeeded in limited ways so far. But the popularity of websites such as YouTube - the video sharing service bought by Google in 2005 for $1.65bn (£800m) - has encouraged many in the TV industry to try and use the internet more profitably. Last month the BBC launched its free iPlayer download service, and digital video recorders such as Sky Plus and Freeview Playback allow viewers to instantly pause and record live television.

Dr Cerf predicted that these developments would continue, and that we would soon be watching the majority of our television through the internet - a revolution that could herald the death of the traditional broadcast TV channel in favour of new interactive services.

"In Japan you can already download an hour's worth of video in 16 seconds," he said. "And we're starting to see ways of mixing information together ... imagine if you could pause a TV programme and use your mouse to click on different items on the screen and find out more about them."

Some critics, including a number of leading internet service providers, have warned that the increase in video on the web could eventually bring down the internet. They are concerned that millions of people downloading at the same time using services such as iPlayer could overwhelm the network.

Dr Cerf rejected these claims as "scare tactics". "It's an understandable worry when they see huge amounts of information being moved around online," he said. But some pundits had predicted 20 years ago that the net would collapse when people started using it en masse, he added. "In the intervening 30 years it's increased a million times over ... We're far from exhausting the capacity."

Dr Cerf also revealed that he has been working on future developments for the internet, taking it beyond the confines of planet Earth. With other researchers he has been developing systems for using the net to communicate and control space vehicles, including interplanetary landers sent to explore the surface of Mars.

"Up until now we've been using the so-called Deep Space Network to communicate across space with radio signals. What my colleagues and I would like to do is use a version of internet," he said. He said the problems encountered by the project - such as having to wait 40 minutes for a response from a space vehicle 235m miles away - were proving awkward, but predicted the system could eventually be used to enhance internet communications. "I want more internet," he said. "I want every one of the 6 billion people on the planet to be able to connect to the internet - I think they will add things to it that will really benefit us all."
