Chowning Research
This is a copy of some information from my Aunt Michelle Tiner that covers
some basic history of the Chowning Meins.
The information was given to me in April of 2007.
I have a whole book on the Chowning / Meins family from your cousin Bob
Chowning. Their family has been working on it for years. They have a lot of
interesting info on the net about the beginning of the Chowning KC transit
lines their struggle with the city over the years to keep the line going. The
city did not want competition. They started out driving a Jitney and Grandpa
Chowning was picking up passengers at the union station during the "bloody
massacre", I believe it was called, when law enforcement were attempting to
take a mafia boss into custody. When the shooting started he ducked down and
the window was blown out of his car. Driving a Jitney was illegal because the
city wanted no competition, what a rebel. Your great great grandfather had a
black smith shop downtown in the late 1800s. His wife left him because he was
a drinker and a little violent. She was granted a divorce in 1903 very rare
for Victorian times a divorced woman so rare, she married a man from
California. Great Grandpa was the only Chowning child. Uncle Willard was shot
in a fox hole in ww2 by his friend who was shot and then his gun went off .
Uncle Dudley as we called him was badly wounded, he had a large hole in his
side, he let me look at the spot when I was little. He was found later, barely
clinging to life and the story is his metal cover bible issued to soldiers
kept the bullets from entering his heart. The Chowning's still have the
dented bible.
One of the old buses from the Chowning KC Transit Line was featured on a
Hallmark Christmas card a few years back and was on a PBS Kansas City program.
Tiner / Hale Research
This is a copy of two emails from my Aunt Michelle Tiner that
is correspondence between her and Mary Hale in San Diego, California.
The forwarded information was given to me in April of 2007.
My great great
great grandfather
I have been emailing a lady
named Mary Hale in San Diego. She is our second cousin.
She sent a photo of your
great great great grandmother (Mattie Hale married to Wilson Grimes
Uncle Guy's mom) with her brother at his house in San Diego.
The address of the house is below in the description of the picture.
ADDED BY JOEL MACKEY: Please note clicking on the address will pull up
a Google Maps in Satellite and Map view.
Message from
Mary Hale "Wilson and Mattie – Summer of 42 This photo was taken
at the side of Frank Hale's house, Mattie's brother (3860
43 rd St, San Diego CA)
It's too bad it is not in color because the Morning Glory's and other flowers
are in bloom."

FROM Mary Hale of San Diego,
CA to Michelle Tiner of Kansas City, MO
The Tiner’s
are related on my maternal grandfather’s side. My grandfather, Wilburn
Franklin Hale had a sister Mattie Lee Hale who married Wilson Grimes, their
wedding photo below. They had a daughter named Virgie and this is the
decendancy as I have it and verified by Jewell Grimes, Virgie’s sister in
1988. I had a phone interview with Jewell around this time. I also talked to
one of the sons that was alive at that time, I think it was Guy or Odus.
Mattie was a much loved and respected sister of my grandfather and my
grandmother (her sister-in-law) thought the world of her. Mattie and Wilson
visited us in San Diego in the 50’s. I am on a hunt for the pictures I have
of your family and will get back to you. I think my brother has them. Where
in San Diego does your nephew live? I will send another email with a
relationship chart that is a visual on how to determine the cousin links.
Good to hear from you and I will get back to you later today. I am working on
my taxes at the moment. Take care, Mary Neal

MACKEY / BARTON / SHALINE RESEARCH:
In research of the surname Shaline I found this:
| SHALINE |
My Grand father was a butcher and in his later years operated a market
in the outskirts of St. Joseph in Buchanan County. Born in southwest Iowa to
David Shaline and Anna Harlan. His first name as far as I can figure was Ed
or more likely Eddy. He had a brother Arch and they were born in the 1880s.
My dad's name was William E. Shaline born in 1910. |

After speaking with my Grandma, Patricia Mackey she told me that my
Grandpa Stambaugh was adopted. She said she used to talk with his uncle which
she wasn't aware was from another family, his name is Archie Shaline. My Grandma
also told me that my Grandpa Stambaugh's birth mother was named Anna. Further
information Patricia Mackey revealed was that the majority of the Shaline family
relations are known to reside in Saint Joseph, Missouri / St. Joseph, Missouri
which my research shows a strong confirmation. My Great Grandma Kathryn Barton
when married to John Stambaugh had their marriage certificate signed by Anna
Shaline. I will try to get a scan and more detailed information including dates
in the future.
Full name is: John Edward Stambaugh whom married Kathryn L. Barton. They
divorced when Patricia Mackey (maiden Stambaugh) was 12 years old and Kathryn
later married Raymond Barton.
